Help study and protect Mesa Tres Rios—a biodiversity hotspot that is home to the threatened Neotropical River Otter.

Mesa Tres Ríos is a remote, wild area where neotropical river otters, black bears, mountain lions, and endangered thick-billed parrots live. Howls of the nearly extinct Mexican wolf were heard in recent years. Unfortunately, this ecosystem in Mexico is unstudied and undocumented, endangering the land and species that exist there. Documenting the biodiversity of this area is critical to informing conservation decisions for the region. In order to protect it, we must know what is there.

In August of 2018, a group of over 50 biologists from Mexico and the United States will visit the Mesa Tres Ríos on a groundbreaking expedition to collect a biological inventory of this unstudied location. The area is just north of the conversion of three rivers, and is the wettest part of the Sonoran Sky Island region. Over the course of a week, this group will collect records of plants and animals and create a detailed biological inventory that will be used to protect this incredible land.

Madrean Discovery Expeditions, a signature program of GGO, does just that. Twice a year, a uniquely qualified group of scientists, land managers, students, photographers, and more, split roughly equally between Mexican and North American nationals, embarks on a multi-day expedition to one of the understudied Sky Island mountain ranges in Sonora. This information is then stored in an open-source database for the world to share, study, and use to preserve these unique ecosystems forever.

This important work can only happen with your help. Your support will allow more work to be done, more records to be collected, and ultimately, more plants and animals protected. Give today, 100% of your donation will support this cause.

Update from the Field

Expeditions to the Sierras Buenos Aires and Elenita garnered approximately 2000 new biodiversity observations. Educational visits to five rural middle schools reached a total of 221 students and 18 teachers - the first environmental education presentation they had ever had from visitors.

We invite you to be a part of the movement to conserve our Sky Island ecosystems and empower our communities. Every dollar raised will go directly toward funding the expeditions. Even a small contribution can make a big difference. For just $19.34 you can fund one day of field work for a scientist!
